2011 SX “The Future Of SX Is Here”

Frame:

2011 New Generation SX bikes started with completely new frames made of lightweight 25CRM04 chromoly steel material in various profiles. Compared to the previous SX frames the MY 2011 frame design provides higher torsional rigidity and reduced longitudinal stiffness designed to absorb high impact energy created from the rear wheel.

* New design benefits both the PDS of the new 2-Stroke and linkage rear suspension of the 4-Strokes

* The basic frame designs are similar. The main difference between PDS and linkage is the tower placement of the upper shock mount, which for both systems takes the main role to isolate the shock absorber forces from the frame.

Steel vs. Aluminum

* KTM’s chromoly frame weighs less than the lightest aluminum competitor

* Easier to maintain and easier to work on

* Provides more space for the fuel tank and other components

Shock

Linkage 2011

* All new WP unit designed for linkage with new piston and bushings that provide consistent seal and reduced friction properties to handle the higher shaft velocities

PDS 2011

* Longer PDS shock to offer an improved rising rate character

Both shocks have a new spring retention and preload system to allow for easy preload adjustment without the use of hammer and punch along with a wide range of adjustability for rebound and high/low speed compression damping.

Swingarm

New cast aluminum swingarm for both the PDS and linkage bikes

* Single-component casting process allows more freedom in design and eliminates any inconsistencies created by welding

* Features updated mounting positions and optimized flex for the new frame

Why PDS for the 2-Strokes?

Through extensive testing, the direct mounted PDS shock has turned out to be the best solution for the 2-Stroke SX bikes.

* 2-Strokes have a totally different engine characteristic than 4-Strokes and also a different center of gravity

* With the lighter PDS system, the 2-Strokes will keep a substantial weight benefit along with easy maintenance

Will PDS remain for the OFFROAD lineup?

Yes, the majority of offroad enduro applications benefit from:

*More linear spring progression of the PDS

* Improved ground clearance

* Less maintenance

* lighter weight

* Easy access for shock removal from the bike within a few seconds

Front Suspension

All SX models are fitted with the latest generation of 48mm USD front forks made by WP in Austria. Due to the intense development in recent years the WP closed cartridge technology has been fine-tuned for excellent sensitivity and damping characteristics, which has been proven in many shootouts over the last season.

* New 2011 settings provide consistent damping characteristics and match the needs of new chassis packages

Triple Clamps

KTM triple clamps set the standard by which all other are measured.

* CNC-machined out of high quality aluminum blocks

* Sophisticated design and clamping avoids squeezing of the tubes and supports fork action

* Provides a certain flex that allows the triple clamps to follow the fork legs when deflected during hard landings and braking

Bodywork

According to KTM’s philosophy that design follows function, the engineers put the highest priority on rider ergonomics. Who could know the needs of a motocrosser better than a 10-time MX world champion? Hence, Stefan Everts played a key role during the entire developement process. From the first clay model to the final product, Stefan was hevily involved with each step of the development and pushed the Kiska design team until every single detail was addressed in order to get the ideal shape of  a future champion’s bike. With Stefan’s input, the results are quickly recognized:

* Super slim ergonomics and a bodywork with excellent contact points between rider and machine

* Everts also insisted on having a wider and 50mm longer rear fender

* No-tools access to the air filter

* Incorporated a lift handle in the outer rear fender, which is well protected against dirt from the rear wheel

Airbox

The new layout of the airbox was driven by two main functions: protection fro the air filter against dirt and a maximum airflow for optimum performance.

* Due to the special design between the filter and intake throttle body, the airbox was designed separately for every displacement and improves power significantly

* The ability to change the large no-tools TwinAir filter quickly sets a benchmark for the industry

Wheels

Lightweight high-quality wheels with CNC-machined hubs and high-end EXCEL rims are hard to beat and remain the standard in terms of durability.

* New silver rims not only appear lighter, they also take the unavoidable damages during tire changes much better than rims coated in any other color

* Spokes are now covered with zinc/nickel coating that not only suits the silver rims optically, but also improves corrosion resistance

* New spoke nipples made of high-strength aluminum further reduce the weight

Brakes

Brakes by Brembo are serial equipment for KTM models and are combined with lightweight wave-type rotors that are benchmark when it comes to feel and brake performance.

4-Stroke Number Plate / Hand Hold

4-Stroke SX models include an optional white number plate background. New bodywork features a convenient hand hold that is well protected from mud by the intuitive rear fender design.

Cooling System

The proven integrated cooling system routes from the cylinder head through the frame triangle directly to the radiators. The removed tubing simplifies the radiator mounting and improves the air flow through the radiators

* A new T-connector with improved fluid flow increases heat dissipation

Tank

The slim 7.5 liter (1.98 gal) tank made from lightweight polyethylene includes a compact fuel pump for the 250/300 SX-F models. All other models introduce a new style fuel tank with the same capacity. The 1/4 turn cap allows easy and quick refilling and includes a security against unwanted turning.

Exhaust Silencer

The 4-Strokes have new improved silencers that score points with a modern and voluminous profile optically and by also reducing the noise level to help meet noise emission regulations.

* A bigger outlet diameter improves the performance and delivers a sound improvement

* New silencers for 2-Stroke bikes introduces a new “two-component” technology. A strong plastic holder is injection-molded around the aluminum housing to better attach the silencer to the motorcycle.

Other Equipment – Highest Level

There are many features on the new SX that highlight the KTM at first appearance against its competitors. For example, the comfortable hydraulic clutch, tapered Renthal handlebar with premium grips, CNC-machined triple clamps, TwinAir air filter, high grade chain and sprockets and a footbrake lever with a high-quality bearing.
